Friend: I have some symptoms of autism according to my therapist. I’m autistic Me: so you were tested? Friend: no I’m just saying I have it I had to fight for years for appointments and accommodations and idk why this pisses me off so much

it’s bc “having symptoms” is not the same as actually having a disorder. i have OCD tendencies but i actually just have anxiety, and i have symptoms of autism but i’m diagnosed with ADHD. and yeah, people who claim to have something without a diagnosis (or at least a health professional actually telling them they most likely have it) bother me too because it makes those of us who actually have it look like we’re faking or using it as an excuse as well

Also this roommate refused to go to therapy as well lmao. It’s frustrating though, and I agree with the first commenter about how it makes people who do struggle with mental or even physical health disorders look, and it undermines the work we put in to go through our lives as best as we can.

This same thing with my (ex)roommate and autism, and he’d bring up that he’s “going nonverbal” before going to ignore me if we ever got into a disagreement and I wanted to talk through it. Idk..I don’t have autism but I’m pretty sure that’s uncontrollable. Also said he has POTS, but refuses to get it diagnosed (despite having the resources and time TO DO SO). This was a bit after I was talking about my experience living with POTS, saying he could relate to being tired after eating 🫩

Ya’ll I get the frustration this kind of gatekeeping does not serve us. It’s right to be pissed off, but undiagnosed people who nonetheless find comfort in the label are not the ones systemically disadvantaging us. Why not turn that righteous anger on the ableist systems and societal attitudes that predispose people to suspect any of us of “faking” anything in the first place.

I’m not fully diagnosed with autism, I’ve only gotten to go to this place one time and have gotten diagnosed with anxiety, depression, and ADHD with a “very high chance of autism” but they need to do more testing (which I’m still fighting for). I have times of being nonverbal but it’s never from an argument, it’s normally a sever trauma response

And my friend doesn’t have to fight for things like that. Bc she’s been working with facilities like this since she was younger (ADHD and anxiety) meanwhile ive had to fight for in person interaction. The first facility i tried had me talking to the doctor on a screen (why tf did I drive there?!) and they talked to me for 30 min

Ah I see, he normally would tell me he’s going nonverbal before leaving the room. I didn’t know if that was typical or not. I wish you luck with advocating for yourself!

I don’t even get to warn people but idk if others can? I can be there and something happens and then I’m silent

I’m autistic with a diagnosis and I will tell you no it is not typical to announce going nonverbal like that. For myself and others I have talked to about it the shut down happens so fast you don’t really have time to make an announcement let alone be able to time it to when disagreements are happening.

Thx to her refusal to get a real diagnosis people think I’m faking my issues bc I haven’t been able to get one. Part of the reason I can’t get one is bc of people who fake it in my area and all the stigma. It took years for me to get an appointment that’s being handed to her

Her family pays for any medical needs 100%, my family only pays for “real” medical needs. Aka not mental health. She has no reason to label herself when she has every available resource. She also expects me to accommodate her but I’m not allowed to be overstimulated or have boundaries

your post comes off a bit as shitting on undiagnosed people. ig your comment makes it seem like you’re more angry at those who don’t try to get diagnosed despite not having extensive barriers, but that’s not super clear.

where did your roommate get “handed an appointment”? all you said was that they claimed to be autistic

She’s been able to receive mental health care since she was much younger, so she has much more resources available with doctors and therapist willing to help her get those appointments. Meanwhile, I’ve had to start from Zero and fight just to get therapy

that’s not her fault she’s been able to receive mental health care, and even those who are able to relatively easily still struggle to get the right diagnoses. she got lucky, you didn’t

But it is her fault that she’s not wanting to get a real diagnosis, is telling everyone she’s autistic and expects us to treat her as such. Meanwhile I was incredibly overstimulated and she wouldn’t stop touching me to the point I had a break down bc “I’m autistic I have to have contact” (she never did this beforehand at all)
