My roommate got broken up with earlier this year and has proceeded to indulge in a downward spiral of mass proportions. He gets drunk every single day and absolutely destroys our apartment and never cleans it up. i don’t even know how to deal with his bs

After a certain point (which your roommate seems to be at), the best thing you can do is give them appropriate consequences for those actions. Report the destruction to the landlord and look into your options for breaking the lease. Take him to court for everything of yours he destroyed. If you feel it necessary (as in it starts to get dangerous) get the police involved.

My roommate did this, I had to sit them down multiple times and tell them they needed professional help and that their actions were disrespectful and not ok. We don’t talk anymore and it’s very awkward but they stopped a good portion of that behavior in the house. They still act crazy and we still have issues but it’s not as bad as it was

you're assuming he's breaking OPs stuff tho, were did OP say that? he said "destroying the apartment" in the post which realistically could be even just leaving snack wrappers out on the table or whatever. you're just assuming the worst.

Destroying could also mean staining or spilling something on an item to the point of irreparable damage, not just tearing something apart. I’m more saying don’t feel bad for charging him for those things if they are destroyed. I’m just covering all the bases as, like you, I don’t know what the apartment looks like.

to clear things up, I mean that he got drunk spilled a shit tom of alcohol on out table and on the floor. left probably two dozen empty beer bottles around the living room and kitchen, and spilled hot sauce all over our wall somehow. I was away for the weekend and came back to that mess and he still hasn’t fully cleaned up

Ok so that’s a stained/warped table depending on the material, either stained carpet or potentially warped hardwood (bare minimum a sticky mess), and a stained wall. Worst case scenario that’s coming out of the shared deposit to fix unless he either takes full responsibility for paying or you take him to court.
