Primary elections aren’t a part of the constitution, it’s how PRIVATE parties decide who to support as a candidate. There is literally nothing requiring private parties to run primaries, the reason they do is because they want to run a candidate that the majority of their voters can get behind. Also, it would have been just as, if not more suicidal for the party to run primaries months before the full election considering running a primary would take like a month and a half to two months at minimum.
