We’d have to see it. It depends a lot on the species, but in general bonsai are incredibly finicky and very difficult to care for. It’s a literal art form, takes years of skill building

Pictures? I can help better if I can see what’s going on.

Okay! All the leaves are dried up (i dont have an image currently). I am desperately trying to water her (without overwatering of course) and give her all the loves my other plants enjoy but for some reason she is just fighting :(

It’s important to remember bonsai are essentially forced dwarf plants of whatever their species is. So to keep it safely growing healthy, a lot needs to be unkept to maintain the dwarf growing patterns. Is it still being tied/restricted somewhere cutting off important water and energy flows through the plant? And it could just be a deciduous species and it’s going into winter dormancy

The previous owners did absolutely nothing for it from what i can tell. they were gifted it but arent plant people at all (the dying bonsai was the only plant they had in their house). it doesnt look like theres anything restraining her from growing, the pot is a pretty decent size too. she doesnt take water well so maybe thats the issue? like i have to water her so slow or else it just runs off instead of being soaked into the soil :/

Does it have a treated moss covering the root and soil system for aesthetics or is it just in soil?

just soil from what i can see BUT there are rocks on the surface of the soil… is it possible that someone glued them to the surface to keep them from flying off?

It is possible, yeah. But rocks are an important part of bonsai soil mixtures (lots inorganic components keep well aerated soil and drainage, bonsai have some extra needs as they’re essentially forced disabled trees). If it’s functional rocks it will most likely be lava rack or pumice (or a clay like rock called akadama). If it’s pretty rock it will look like those water fountain stones. Though either could be wrongly glued in
