I have a dead/dying bonsai that was re-homed to me. Ive been trying to save it but nothing seems to be working :( any tips? It’s important to remember bonsai are essentially forced dwarf plants of whatever their species is. So to keep it safely growing healthy, a lot needs to be unkept to maintain the dwarf growing patterns. Is it still being tied/restricted somewhere cutting off important water and energy flows through the plant? And it could just be a deciduous species and it’s going into winter dormancy
The previous owners did absolutely nothing for it from what i can tell. they were gifted it but arent plant people at all (the dying bonsai was the only plant they had in their house). it doesnt look like theres anything restraining her from growing, the pot is a pretty decent size too. she doesnt take water well so maybe thats the issue? like i have to water her so slow or else it just runs off instead of being soaked into the soil :/
It is possible, yeah. But rocks are an important part of bonsai soil mixtures (lots inorganic components keep well aerated soil and drainage, bonsai have some extra needs as they’re essentially forced disabled trees). If it’s functional rocks it will most likely be lava rack or pumice (or a clay like rock called akadama). If it’s pretty rock it will look like those water fountain stones. Though either could be wrongly glued in
