They take a lot of energy from the plant, and removing them would allow the plant to focus on new growth. The medium that your orchid came in is likely highly moisture retentive, which is definitely not ideal for an epiphyte. Take the orchid out of the medium and remove it from the root ball. For your first orchid just keep it simple and don’t worry about mounting it or growing it in water either. Everyone says to do that but it makes it so much harder to take care of. You can feed them with orchid fertilizer and keep them in pretty bright areas but not so much direct sun.
