Maybe staple plastic sheeting on the inside, like the stuff you put down to protect the floors when you paint

I would just get some clear saucers for the bottom, put your existing plant pots on said saucers and fill the cracks with moss

I would just put a protective stain on it normally porch stain is a safe choice
