how old was he? i’m just wondering because those tank conditions are pretty cold for a betta

at least 2+ years and looked old. when i got him he didn’t have the greyish coloring. the tank is also usually in the 70s but since i live in texas i can’t have a massive heater for most of the year and hadn’t had a chance to get a higher powered one yet from the cold weather
