most chimneys, as far as i’m aware, have a bit that you can open when you light a fire but remain closed the rest of the time so stuff doesn’t just fall in your house (rain, leaves, bugs, animals). if you never actually “use” your fireplace birds will build nests on top of that! It’s happened to us before bc we never actually light our fireplace lol
