Currently a undergrad student getting ready to go to law school where I will have to find ways to pay rent when a job not suggested first year. Am I better to be saving my money for rent for the future in a HYSA or should I still put money in an IRA? 22M

Rent. You can cover living expenses with student loans, but you’re still looking at stupid interest rates. Either way, so long as you’re not a public defender, your income is gonna go through the roof the second you’re out. Student income is nothing like full time income. Do what you need to do to survive, a couple thousand is a rounding error on a lawyers salary.

It depends on what you’re wanting to use this money for. I see you say need to find a way to pay rent. Is the money you’re saving needed for rent? If yes then do not put it into either types of IRA as you’ll have to pay income tax and a fee for taking it out early. If you are saving for retirement then put it into a Roth IRA and invest in an etf like VOO.
