Thanks = less serious. You’re just giving thanks… vaguely Thank you = more serious. You’re specifically assigning your thanks to YOU They both come from the same root word of “thank”, so “thanks” is not inherently more informal. “thanks” is just less genuine feeling.

thanks is casual and informal. it’s an abbreviation of the formal “thank you”.
