lol I’m gay. grew up in a VERY orthodox christian environment. Coming out basically makes you outcast by extended family and the broader ethnoreligious community. I have journal entries from hs with verbatim “I’m planning on taking this to the grave.” Didn’t even fathom that coming out (to myself or the world) could be a feasible concept until college.
Still not out to extended family for that reason, but I no longer consider myself in the closet. Out to all my friends, close family, have no reluctance being out to new people I meet. Just not subjecting myself to the trauma of going back to that religious community. It’s not worth the emotional toll, and people are pretty fixed in their ways.
