We should not pay extra money just because a product was created in a different country.

i mean realistically imported goods are naturally going to cost more money because of the cost to ship them. i don’t think we need to artificially inflate the cost through excessive tariffs though

The whole point of tariffs is to keep money in your country. Many countries have been ruined financially because our businesses went global during the 20th century and ran their local businesses into the ground with synthetic prices

key word: excessive. i’m not opposed to all tariffs but it seems clear to me that our recent strategy of levying ridiculous tariffs against every country in the world is not working. the reality is that we live in a global economy and important goods do, in fact, come from outside the U.S. i’m all for bolstering domestic business when applicable and preventing U.S. companies from outsourcing all their manufacturing so they can exploit impoverished people in bangladesh…

Tariffs also only make sense when targeted. If there’s a tariff on a product that is not and will not be produced in the US, that’s just an added cost to the consumer, straight up. If we want a product to get made in the US, we need to make it financially viable to start a company here that makes it, which tariffs don’t do unless they drive the price up by a ton. Even then, people won’t start a company if they expect prices to change again in 4 years, if not less.
