Not even close to as damaging for society imo. People could easily smoke before it was legal, everybody had a plug. But the gambling is way more detrimental to young men and just sports in general

there’s a give and take for everything. you could argue the same thing with alcohol; alcoholism is a major issue for a lot of people. the legalization also massively defunds criminal groups running it and introduces regulation so it’s not laced when you buy it. same thing with weed.

Legalizing pot didn’t put dispensaries inside your house. You still have to get up and go somewhere to access it. On the other hand, legalizing sports gambling put it directly in your hands 24/7 with the easiest access possible

In the case of gambling the “criminal groups” are polymarket, kalshi, and other sport betting platforms

i was thinking more like the italian mafia during prohibition, but honestly with the gambling epidemic nowadays, i agree that they’re really worse than any underground group that might have been there before for sports betting

Yeah, they're not really equivalent. Weed should mainly compared to alcohol, both drugs where legalization/ safety were/ are questions. The closest thing to compare online sports gambling/ prediction markets to, is the online porn industry, though tbh I don't know if we're ready to have that conversation yet as a society.
