
the northern flicker is the US’s only ground feeding woodpecker! and the east coast ones have yellow feather shafts, while the western ones have red! this is because of their diets, but it’s unknown why it affects the feather shafts and not just the feathers (like in flamingos) you can also tell their sex by if they have a mustache or not! (literally, the males have a patch of black (or red, for west) feathers under their beak) here is a picture of an eastern male!
