I mean I definitely think companies have ways of finding out, but I don’t think they have some guy watching regularly

The radio signals emitted by wifi routers can be used to track peoples’ movements around their home. I think Comcast was advertising it as a security camera replacement or something. I don’t think they’re collecting everyone’s data yet, but I’m almost certain that they will sometime in this century.

when I wasn't paying for Spotify premium I always got skincare ads if I was in my bathroom and I always got dishwasher ads when I was in my kitchen

nobody cares where you are, what you’re doing or what chores you’re doing unless you’re a threat to national security or murdered somebody or smth

I agree with this, but at the same time, this is the argument that pro surveillance people use to push their technology. People shouldn’t be able to figure out what you do every second of the day even if they tried.

I don’t even think it’s necessarily a pro surveillance thing, it’s just a side effect of modern technology. We like having cell phones and computers and smart cars and TVs but they have other consequences that you don’t even think about

They don’t need to have a human watching thanks to AI.

If you’re so certain that nobody cares about you and that it’s not a big deal, then why not let me put a camera in your bathroom? Or is that suddenly weird now that you can actually see clear evidence that you’re being watched instead of letting yourself forget about it?

Because apathy about your privacy will lead to erosion of it. And also, corporations definitely do care about your daily routines. Information on how you spend your days and what you spend them doing can be sold to advertisers and insurance companies. For example, a health insurance company may buy data from a location-enabled app on your phone, and seeing that you don’t go to the gym, deem you at risk for heart disease and raise your rates.

corporations care quite a bit when it comes to forming statistics about customers or potential customers habits. They're not digging into "Person A does XYZ at 9:52AM" but they absolutely track data or buy tracked data to maximize advertisement efficiency and understand their market better.

And check out the expose on LG’s Automated Content Recognition software they put on their TVs that they use to track what shows you watch, when you watch them, even when you pause them, that they then sell to advertisers so that they can push advertisements at more opportune times

idk i feel like they only care about that stuff for marketing and algorithms, and it’s all done by computers. i guess i misunderstood. this post made it sound like it was stalkerish, and i really don’t think corporations give a fuck enough to stalk everybody.

If you need me to spell it out for you: You’re essentially subscribing to the “I have nothing to hide and therefore nothing to fear” philosophy. I said, “Well can I put a camera in your bathroom then”. Assumedly, you do not want some random person being able to watch you in the bathroom. And so, clearly, you do have something to hide. And companies and governments will keep taking more and more of the privacy you don’t care about away until eventually, they start taking away the privacy you do.

oh my fucking god stop being an asshole first of all. second of all, they gather cellphone data for marketing and advertisement, not to creep on you while you shit. they don’t know when you’re doing the dishes. they don’t care. they want to know what you’re clicking on and when so they can give you an ad that gives them more money. it is very different from a literal camera.

If compiling a comprehensive list of your interests, movements, affiliations, opinions, routines, and habits in your day to day life isn’t stalking then I don’t know what is. Just because it’s done by a computer doesn’t mean it’s not still an invasion of privacy, especially when that computer is actively forwarding that information to other entities. It’s not sitting inert on a hard drive somewhere, you’re being analyzed, assessed, and dissected with every word you say.

Not to mention, it’d be trivial for a human to access that data if they wanted to. So if for some reason you’re only worried when a human does it, there you go.

Honestly I don’t care if I’m being a dick because apathetic people like you piss me off. Grow a spine. You don’t even have a reason to fear Flock cameras under your own philosophy. And by the way? They absolutely know when you’re doing the dishes if you have one of those IOT dishwashers. Even down to whether you use liquid or pod detergent.
