4WD means all 4 tires go at the same time identically. AWD means all 4 tires go at the same time independently. So let’s say you’re stuck in a muddy spot. 4WD will spin all the tires at the same speed if it’s 1, 2, 3, or 4 tires stuck in mud. AWD will let the tires spin at different speeds. So if your front driver side tire and your rear passenger side tire are in mud pits but your other two tires aren’t, it’ll give more power to the tires with traction and spin the others more slowly.
One thing to know about AWD (if you’re ever considering buying a vehicle with AWD) is that if you ever have to replace a tire, you usually have to replace all four at the same time. There is no “I’ll buy two now and two later”. Uneven tires can be different sizes. More usage = less rubber left. It might be minimal but it can have an impact on your vehicle. It’ll try (or can) to spin the tires at different speeds constantly. Even on dry pavement.
