I’m surrounded by epidemiologists and have taken several epidemiology classes, although I’m def not one myself. The reason hantavirus won’t be the next pandemic is because it’s just not contagious enough, even in this more contagious form. It was contagious enough for a cruise ship outbreak, but that’s an incredibly low bar. It’s not enough to become a pandemic.

The R0 of COVID is 2.5-5.7, of the Spanish Flu 2-3, of seasonal flu ~1.3. The r0 of typical hantavirus is literally estimated to be 0. The Andean strain could possibly have an r0 as high as 1, but that’s still not enough for a pandemic’s worth of spread. (r0 = avg # of people an infected person will infect)
