Not only are they not paying for your dinner. YOU are paying for THEIR dinner. Or someone is, hopefully significant other, parents, best friend, or the group.

I wonder if this is a generational thing because I would never want a friend to pay for me on their bday, but I saw a debate about this online where most people were saying the first option.

From what Ive seen the expectation is that if you put forth the invite you should pay or disclose clearly that they need to pay themselves regardless of generation. I dont think the expectation is inherently diff I think the typical choice and communication is diff
