i need housing and dietary accommodations for medical purposes and my new university told they can’t guarantee i’ll receive them because i missed the priority date for housing. i have documentation and have provided it to them. is this normal?

If they had a deadline and you didn’t follow it, then I think it’s reasonable for them to not be able to guarantee it

Contact a local office that works with ADA matters and have an advocate reach out to the university for you. It’s sadly normal, but it’s very wrong.

Theres comfort accommodations and necessary accommodations and the types you have/are requesting will change if theyre inherently allowed to 'ignore' any of them per ada standards, in terms of housing there really isnt much they can do besides add you to a priority move list on availability because they cant just take certain housing away from someone else it was promised to unless its super emergent/necessary (first floor dorm for a wheelchair accommodation vs a POTS accommodation for example)

Assuming they knew you needed these accommodations, they should have told you before you committed that they couldn’t guarantee them. But the university doesn’t have to provide food and housing, my school doesn’t guarantee that to anyone

my university requires campus living and meal plan. i’m guessing you know that some universities require a certain living situation, though. regardless, ada is not super flexible when it comes to allowing universities to deny accommodations, so i was seeking knowledge outside of my own on this. maybe they have a process to come up with the next best alternative if needs are not met?

This is at least the experience Ive had getting accommodations for my POTS (hence the example) I can totally talk more abt what ive run into but in terms of standard practice idk how helpful Ill be

Even if you were accepted prior and missed the deadline, there’s a very strong, 95%+ chance they actually can accommodate, they just don’t want to. It’s abhorrent how accessibility is an add-on and not at the forefront for most institutions…

^most places always keep some empty in the case that like, someone breaks a leg half way through the year or something that would mean an emergency accom placement
