Not necessarily, take family heirlooms for example. I know of people who have been in difficult financial situations that had diamonds passed down and hold onto them to sell in case they get desperate.

Or people that buy them on a whim, who really shouldn’t be spending that kind of money and will regret it later. It happens more than you’d think, especially with young couples.
