“medically transition” is the wrong term here, because there exist too wide a variety of reversible or irreversible physical treatments, and mental/behavioral health treatment is also medical

There are many different types and levels to “medically transitioning” but I’ll assume you’re referring to genital surgery to which I’d say it’s inappropriate at their age.

no you can’t drink, own a gun or vote. why should you be allowed to undergo procedures we frankly don’t know the long term effects of

Why would my opinion be more relevant than a medical professional's opinion? What do educated, qualified people have to say on the topic through research and experience?

No expert but you should probably wait to see how you feel when you’re an adult? Nothing against transitions or anything. Just think there might be something discovered later that’s permanent.

Kids are stupid. That’s why they can’t drive, drink, own a gun, vote, consent, get tattoos, or go to R rated movies alone. Why would this be any different?

Reversible medical transitioning? Absolutely at the medically advised ages. Irreversible no.

This isn’t strictly a medical question, it also has moral aspects to it as well.

i consider puberty blockers medical transition. it's irreversible.

Medical advice is inherently moral.

there is not enough research to draw a conclusive claim. there is enough evidence of minors regretting their irreversible medical treatment which is enough to say no minor should be allowed to permanently alter their body.

Gender transition is deemed medically necessary when the cons of not transitioning outweigh the benefits of not transitioning. It would be immoral to let someone suffer once it reaches that threshold, and further, doctors use science, research, and statistics to support when this threshold has been passed and transition is necessary.

yeah, no. whats medically necessary is seeking a therapist to assist you while you deal with your mental disorder and having support from your family and friends. thereafter, when you're 18, if you decide to take the step of medically transitioning, go for it.

I think you're missing the point that a medical transition is the step after when therapy isnt working.

upvote 10 downvote

Anonymous replying to -> #3 2d

in which that step can be taken at 18. are you aware there are people who detransition after living as trans for 10 or 20 years? CHILDREN should not be allowed to make an irreversible change to their body. they aren't allowed to drink, smoke, get a tattoo, enlist in the military, DRIVE. there are 12, 13, 14 year olds getting their breasts chopped off when they haven't even learned algebra.

Oh my god, get off the coke PLEASE and read a book or something. I can't argue with you if you are using fake facts. I've very logically explained how medical transition is a last resort. I can't think for you, you gotta do that part yourself.

You cant just say NUH UH IM RIGHT and think that's a good response. 1. Minors getting surgery is extremely rare. 2. "Regret rates" are extremely rare. 3. Most minors who get breast reductions are born as male (~97%). 4. Irreversible treatment is not given as a want, it's given as a need. You're arguing against what's essentially a non-issue, and that's preventing the few kids who need care from getting what they need.

nah, we're arguing against children being allowed to make irreversible changes to their body. regret rates are not extremely rare — that one percent study people love to use is not a reliable study. irreversible treatment is not needed for MINORS. you understand our brain is developing well into our 20s right?

Medical professionals use irreversible treatment on minors WHEN THEY DECIDE IT IS NEEDED. They are literally the most qualified people to decide if it is needed. I dont understand why YOU are deciding what other people do and dont medically need.

yes they are — especially for a woman who takes testosterone. have you actually listened to the testimonies of minors who were on puberty blockers and then detransitioned? stunting the growth of a CHILD is INSANE.

Oh that’s why trans suicide rates are so high right? REGRET RATES ARE SO LOW BECAUSE THEYRE NOT ALIVE TO STATE THEY REGRET IT.

it’s not actually as rare as you think; they’ve just been doing sexual assignment procedures on newborn infants without parental consent to assign them the sex they most align with at birth up until recently, so people go their entire lives without knowing. not to be rude, but you sound like you would really benefit from a 100-level gender studies elective.

GnRH agonists (called puberty blockers in the context of postponing puberty to allow trans youth until they’re 18 to decide if they would like to transition) have a wide variety of uses and have been proven safe and effective since the 70s.

in other words, you could have been intersex right now, but because a doctor was allowed to “medically transition” you at birth, you can live a medically typical life in the sex a doctor assigned you and probably have children.

I mean they need to get signed off by several professionals to transition. I know people who are trans and have gotten hormone therapy. There is a lot of red tape involved and you have to speak to a psychiatrist and doctors before you can even think about getting any procedure or hormones. Minors have even more red tape. They mostly only let minors transition if they are diagnosed with severe gender dysphoria.
