playing sports/competing ≠ athlete and vice versa. obviously these two things can correlate but they aren’t exclusive to each other.

I wouldn't call someone a doctor for having a first aid kit in their bathroom, I wouldn't call someone a firefighter for blowing out a candle, and I wouldn't call someone a soldier for playing Call of Duty. Seems odd to lower the bar for people who play sports.

You need to compete, but it also needs to be a lifestyle. Weekend pickup games are “athletic” but the players aren’t inherently athletes. But someone who takes it seriously, whose life is ordered by their status of “athlete”, is an athlete regardless of what level they’re competing at.

Technically the definition of a sport is something competitive (at any level) so I’d vote that. If you say you’re an athlete I’d ASUME you compete in smth, doesn’t mean you have to?

It’s okay to admit that some people are better at things than others

You also need to be competitive. Comparison to make the point: someone with 12 followers calling themselves an “influencer” just because they post the content and consider themselves an influencer and order their life by this narrative of “I’m an influencer” is not, in fact, an influencer.

But a 50k follower account could be considered an influencer, depending on niche. They aren’t not an influencer just because others in their niche have 1mil+ followers. They’re just at different levels of the influencer ecosystem.
