Would the U.S. be a true meritocracy if race and gender were not social factors?

No because lack of opportunity for poor people. Someone could have skill but not the opportunity to apply it. An example would be: a high schooler that works a job after school to support family may have a lower SAT score because they didn't have time to study or money to hire a tutor.

Nepotism would still be a massive problem. The very concept of networking goes against the meritocracy myth.

Our political system favors people who are good speakers, not necessarily people who know the most about politics

Being born into poverty is a bigger predictor of staying in poverty than race or gender

And also people will just find something else to discriminate people by. Race and gender are just the easiest, but people will find some other excuse
