Anyone who says yes doesn’t understand what it’s like to be depressed

I lost my mom when I was 15 to suicide and at the time I was really mad at her, I felt like she abandoned me, but I never thought that it was selfish. I’ve always understood she came from a really difficult upbringing and never got the proper tools to be able to cope with life.

I’ve struggled with suicidal ideation my whole life, still voted yes. Just because you have a natural desire for something doesn’t mean indulging in that thing isn’t selfish. You can’t ignore the damage you do to those you love, and you are certainly not offing yourself for anyone’s benefit but your own. Just because an alcoholic craves a drink doesn’t mean it’s not selfish for them to hurt their loved ones for it. Gatekeeping depression is a weird maneuver.

I don’t think people should think of suicide as a massive sin, but to claim it isn’t selfish is immature, and self serving in its own right

(I kinda misread the question, I don’t think people who commit suicide are inherently selfish, but the act itself 100% is)

As someone who also deals with suicidal ideation, you’re right. It is selfish, but because of society’s massive stigmatization of selfishness, when I initially read “selfish” I conflated that with “condemnable” in my mind. I agree with your point that people aren’t wholly selfish if they commit suicide, the act is, but I don’t think its selfishness makes it less understandable that people do it
