The vultures who owned Spirit debt did not want to be subordinated to the government. They just wanted to get paid and go home. There was no acquirer now. Republicans are arguing that JetBlue wanted to merge w spirit and the Biden admin blocked it on the argument less competition would be bad. I mean bankruptcy is just the market working and is the default (pun) outcome unless there is a compelling reason for the govt to throw significant amts of money into a business
As an Econ major all of the people saying “let them go bankrupt” are fucking idiots. Not going to write a book but Spirit was a price disrupter keeping prices lower across the board AND offering affordable prices for everyday people. Without Spirit, prices for the same routes have already quadrupled (under $100 to $400) and it will likely get worse once the airlines figure out just how much more they can squeeze out of people. It also just made 6,000+ people in my county jobless.
The government always has a say in major sales or acquisitions of companies especially those of which work internationally like airlines, its to 'manage monopolization' and protect international affairs, thats the current hold on the ea sale to saudi arabia in the gaming industry for example
