To me checking the list is the equivalent to editing a paper, its what you do after you make it, the 'first' read youre interpreting is what I interpret as the list being made which I dont think counts as reading

I say 3 bc checking implies reading it beforehand IMO

You don’t read something as you’re writing it, especially a list. You’re writing one entry at a time not looking at it as a whole thing

Gonna be nerdy with it. Reading and writing (esp in a comp sci context) are related but separate things. Storing a 1 or a 0 is a different process from accessing that 1 or 0. So Write Read Read would be checking it twice after writing it and thus two total reads.

To be totally annoying about the subject, it says “hes making a list, HES checking it twice” in most versions. If you think making the list is checking it, then maybe the person accouted for that and made it the first check and he only checks it one more time after that. Arguably, with that logic, one could say hes only checking it once. Some say “he’s making a list, AND checking it twice,” so if you think the making the list is also checking then, sure, hes checked it 3 times
