I think the reason “worst state” stuff usually involves the big/wealthy states like Cal/Tex/Florida is that it isn’t nearly as fun to shit on states filled with people that are actually suffering.

Per capita! It is followed by New Mexico, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Louisiana respectively to make the top 5. However, if you count DC even though it’s not a state, they’d be #1

Anchorage for me but Naknek doesn’t help it’s not above the northern slope but that’s cool you been there. Not an inhibition kinda person but I wouldn’t expect less, there isn’t much to do up there.
