Me and my family are moving, and I shut down emotionally because packing ‘til rise until sleep for a week is draining. I communicated that to my mom, and she said that makes sense. Now she’s telling me I’ve failed her as a support person. I am despairing

I’m sorry but we’re not supposed to be a “support person” for our fucking parents. She failed you as a parent when she put that unreasonable blame and burden on your shoulders. Fuck I hate parents.

Eh, she’s going through a lot. She was in a pretty bad car crash a few years ago, and since my shitheel dad wanted to keep her comatose so he could run off with some 24-year-old, she didn’t get the treatment she needed and has lasting TBI. She’s stressed, she’s trying to put her life together, and so I get why she’s lashing out—I’d be doing the same in her boots, and have done the same under less pressure. But still, it’s just a lot sometimes

You understanding the “why” she said something doesn’t make it right or warranted or correct. She needs to acknowledge that was not a correct thing to say to her own child and understand that her child should never be her “support person”. That’s not a balanced or healthy relationship. Like she literally told you that you FAILED her. That’s a fucked up thing to say. We can be understanding of the “why” but it needs to be followed with acknowledgment and correction. That can’t continue.

Like she should be YOUR support person as a PARENT. YOU have a shitheel dad. YOU are emotionally drained and tired from packing so much. YOU are probably stressed too. She needs a different support person. You can be a “supportive” person to your parent obv. But I hope she’s not putting that responsibility completely on you. I hope she has a friend or sister or brother or therapist or whoever as her primary support person.

I mean, it’s either I compartmentalize her lashing out or I cut ties with her—she’s not going to get better control of her emotions, at least not without therapy, which isn’t something she’s interested in. I realize from a moral perspective what she’s doing is wrong, but there’s nothing that can compel her to change—though I know you say it can’t continue, without her wanting to change it will. And she’s the only family I have left, which I don’t want to lose

I mean, yeah, I had a shitheel dad, but she had a domestic abuser and an incestuous, cheating rapist for a husband, so she’s got trauma of her own. No, right now me and my 12 year old sister are the only people in her life right now, and I’d rather she take out her frustrations on a leeching NEET like myself than my sister. I know it’s not right, but it’s either that or stranding them to be alone with each other, which is in neither mine, nor my mom’s, nor my sister’s best interests
