Like I’ll gladly take the dude who has been to two Super Bowls and won one over a guy who throws 4 INTs in a wild card game against the Texans and choked a 27-0 lead to the Jaguars. All those regular season stats mean nothing if you can’t back it up by playing well in the playoffs. 🤷
You missed the entire point of my argument (I don’t care who thinks which QB is better), and it’s quite fallacious to use the quality of team-building as an excuse for or against either of them, as that’s out of their control. I don’t think Hurts is perfect by any means, and I’m not afraid to acknowledge he looked mid in the first two playoff games this year or awful against the Bucs. However, he rebounded from those three games and had two of his best games against the Commanders and Chiefs.
Cunningham, McNabb, Vick, Garcia, Jaworski None of those guys could get it done. 3 straight NFC championship losses in a row and 4 total with McNabb, especially how he played horribly against Carolina and Tampa, which I’ve gone back and watched, and are truly horrendous displays of QB play by him, with a supporting offensive cast that played even worse.
I bring up their situations bc Hurts has always had a great team around him and has had far better coaching as well. It’s also worth noting that Hurts play falls off a cliff if the play calling isn’t good/great. What I’m trying to get at is that you can’t say Herbert isn’t clutch when he’s consistently been dragging the Chargers to wins despite poor coaching and despite poor roster construction. I’m also saying Hurts only plays at high level/clutch when the situation is perfect bc if something
That’s the fault of the Chargers as a team, which I acknowledge – people often forget how abysmal the playcalling was in 2023 for the Eagles. Hell, the defensive coordinator position was swapped mid-season and the defense proceeded to drop to the worst in the league. However, we still were holding Hurts accountable for his poor decision-making that year, particularly later in the season. Ironically enough, both have had Kellen Moore as their OC at one point in their careers so far for a year 😂
I think people don’t acknowledge what’s a team issue and what are individual QB issues. Hurts, for instance, holds onto the ball too long, relies on early reads too much, and should work to gain more power in his throws. Herbert, while excellent with the deep ball and has a cannon of an arm, needs to work on the short game more, run out of the pocket more when there’s an open lane, and get the ball higher in the air to prevent tips/deflections from happening.
Yeah I’ll agree with you there, Hurts also can’t throw over the middle to save his life, and all of Hurts issues put together kind of makes it seem like he can’t read a defense fully. Anyways, Herbert has become better at running when needed but he does need to work on putting touch on his passes, too often he tries to laser everything into a tight window.
I will say, both of them have also been through a carousel of offensive coordinators. Regardless, I’d rather see these guys have a steady OC than have to deal with constant drastic change of playcalling between each year. Either way, I’m excited to see how both guys end up playing, because whether we admit it or not, you have to be ridiculously talented to be a starting QB in the NFL. The league is absolutely better when more QBs are playing at a high level, and…
Everyone’s gonna have their opinions, but at the end of the day, we have to see what happens when each of these games happen. The NFL is a week to week, year by year league, so 2022, 2023, and 2024 mean nothing as long as 2025 is concerned. I think both Hurts and Herbert will have good, productive seasons, barring injury (in which I hope both stay healthy all year).
