They do different jobs and have similar but separate goals. GM has to look at the longer term than the coach does. If you don’t give the GM grace you will get literally nowhere because each one will want different things. Take Ryan Poles for example, I guarantee the Bears aren’t as successful this year if Poles was given the boot with Eberflus
I saw a graphic saying just two pro bowlers have been drafted to the bills since Josh Allen was drafted. I’d give beane credit for the Stefon Diggs trade if that was his doing (tho Justin Jefferson was taken by the Vikings with the pic that they got from the bills for Diggs👀) but that’s the about it. And for that matter, being an above average GM doesn’t say much since at least half of them are in the mid-ass tier
Something you have to keep in mind for the bills is Pegula is not qualified to find a GM and HC and he understands that. Beane is president of football operations now so hopefully he can find a good HC. The one question is how much McDermott was controlling the draft picks. A lot of the guys the bills draft are undersized/high character players which is what McDermott wanted for his system. Beane continues to not draft well, the new HC can bring in his guy as long as Beane can at least find a HC
As others have mentioned there’s not many great GMs. GM is a difficult job and it’s not like HC where you can fail and go back to coordinator or find another HC job. GMs don’t bounce around like that so if you find one you can’t run them out of town like you can a coach. Even someone like Poles, who is mid, no doubt about that, is a better option than finding a new one every 2-3 years because you just won’t get anywhere like that. A GM is not changing the team in 1 year it’s an undertaking
