Regardless of if he did or didn’t cheat in college he’s by far the worst QB since JaMarcus Russell and using a first round pick on him will go down as one of the dumbest front office decisions ever
The Vikings really saw that JJ McCarthy literally had the opposing defenses plays and actually thought he could read a live NFL defense

It’s basically his rookie season and they knew that they’d have to develop him. He’s terrible but it’s malpractice to not give him another year

I think they were put in a tough spot. Kirk was coming off of an achilles injury and wanted a long term contract and Vikings didn’t want to do that. That left them with Darnold who they weren’t expecting to turn things around so they didn’t commit to him long term. The top QBs in ‘24 draft were off the board and so it was either reach on someone like JJ or Nix (better but not by much) or reach on someone in ‘25. In hindsight they should’ve waited to get someone like Dart but Dart being this good

Well they don’t have a choice so we’ll see year 2 of him regardless

But he’d have to have a SIGNIFICANT jump just to be an okay game manager

He looks like a worse version of Zach Wilson rn

Zach Wilson could make the throws he was just mentally disabled because the game was too fast. McCarthy can’t throw AND he’s stupid. 9👹 looks like a worse version of Josh Rosen

This fast was not expected. I think they also liked that JJ was in a more pro style offense at Michigan and that he was really young.

I’d argue Michigan only ran a pro style rushing offense, their passing attack was pretty basic and completely reliant on their established rushing game

That’s true, Zach Wilson made some nice throws fr, JJ has Justin Jefferson and can’t even get the ball to him

Even still then that’s valued for young QBs. A lot of college QBs don’t operate under center so once they’re drafted teams have to teach them that. That may not seem like a big deal but it greatly impacts the run game. When runs are from under center there’s better cutback lanes for the RB opposed to taking runs from shotgun/pistol.

It prob shouldn’t be, I’d much rather have a QB with big play ability than a QB who only made super easy throws because of an elite run game. When it comes to who actually has more potential the answer is clear in my mind.

JJ did make some nice throws in college but not often. He has the physical tools to be a good QB just needs to better his mechanics and some decision making.
