I wish I just had a job like chopping wood for a log mill in 1875 instead of swiping thru job listings on indeed that have 25+ requirements and want a master’s degree and your soul for $12 hourly….

Idk if it would make you feel better or worse but the log mill in 1875 with no OSHA regulation, minimum wage, or maximum hours, would NOT be a step up

I am fully aware there was no OSHA. Do you know how many workplace accidents occur in modern warehouses across the US every year even with OSHA? And yes the work at the log mill I am fully aware you had to work like 6 days a week and you’d work there after handling your chores on your homestead and coming home to then tend your crops and milk your cow if you owned one. It WOULD be a step up for me. Maybe not for you.

Do you really believe the job I described at $12 hourly with a long list of tasks (and probably other people’s tasks too) and somehow they require that you have some big ass degree and then after working your job you don’t have any home you can afford right now and no groceries and no gas and all the utilities and services you have to pay for in modern times is REALLY a step up from the saw mill?? At least at the saw mill I have one job - try not to die and cut as much wood as possible and haul.

Bruh thinks I don’t know the realities of life in 1875 or in 2026. Tell me how great my life is in 2026 and how I’m wrong for wishing I lived in 1875 working on a saw mill. You think I don’t know anything? I’ve lived too much life already. I crave something that modern capitalism can’t provide me. This world just chews people up and spits them out. Go kick rocks.

I’m not saying contemporary workplaces are good but I think you have a seriously misunderstood vision of the average sawmill workers life in 1875. Im aware workplace accidents are a thing I’ve literally worked in an industrial factory. But we have things like workers comp, and unions, and hard hats. Maybe if you had a spouse who was laboring at home and didn’t also have to work in an industrial factory you’d come home to a cow or vegetable patch but a homestead would not allow for outside work.

You would likely be living in a factory town owned by the sawing company, paid in general store credit

You are assuming my geographical location in the US - I had picked a saw mill that was far out west in a new beginning township not a factory owned town. You’re describing a completely different location probably closer to the east coast that is more heavily populated. Oh I’m sorry I forgot you know everything about what I’m thinking and saying here. And like I said stfu.

Yeah so that situation would have been a logging camp of mostly single men, because the logistics of travel and labor would not allow you to just clock into a sawmill like that. I’m not claiming to be a sawmill expert but I literally did my undergrad thesis on frontier history.

Like have your escapist fantasy, go off, but like. Idk. Maybe realize that that’s what it is, and try making your present situation better however you can.

Wow someone says “no” and you take that as “yes keep going”. Someone says “leave me alone” and you take that as “I’m going to keep talking to them”. Like I said stfu.

Again you are ASSUMING you know my present situation and ASSUMING it can just be made better. Then how about YOU tell me everything that I’m dealing with right now in my present situation and the exact steps since you know everything. Or how about you stfu.

I left a comment that I thought was trying to be helpful, was met with a several comments long rude rant, responded to it with the same attitude you came at me with, and like. I’m just as done as you are with this convo ig. You don’t know what *anyone* is dealing with, why do you think it’s ok to come at a stranger like that? You didn’t say any of those things to end, just “shut the fuck up”. Sorry for misinterpreting.

You are the annoying one. OP is the one minimizing the reality of living in that time. 1 was just trying to be helpful. YOU sound like you’re being self righteous and inserting yourself where you don’t needta be. If you have nothing better to do than insert yourself into an internet argument YOU need to get a life
