adhd medications act like a drug but only to neurotypical people, it helps neurodivergent people feel and perform somewhat more “normal” but they don’t want to really acknowledge that :/

Yeah…I trust medical professionals to use the word drug without stigma but I feel like in a headline the distinction would be important. These aren’t street drugs, they’re meds that save lives.

This is such a cultural thing, too. When I told my dad that my fully qualified, licensed, and almost frustratingly by-the-book psychiatrist prescribed me adderall, he acted like I was buying meth off a street corner

Unfortunately people who abuse the meds are the ones who pop into people’s minds first, which will always make these meds 1) look more optional than they really are for people struggling with adhd, and 2) harder to get/perpetually in shortage.

I think the article speaks exclusively wrt people who actually need the med/are diagnosed. Like I can see how medicating people who need to be medicated/truly gave adhd will reduce their risk of car accidents, at the very least

There are lots of people who don’t get medicated who self medicate with illegal drugs. Been happening with weed for years. Coke too
