and i feel like im gonnna come across as someone who likes fucked up shit now because why am i so pressed about this? but i want to just share things im interested in. i want to see something and like it and maybe even relate to it. without worrying about the implications of my personhood by myself and being constantly perpetuated by poser activists who just want moral high ground in every situation.
everyone is so comfortable cutting off or hating people for "icks" - a word that has lost all meaning after being turned into gen z online quirk jargon. i remember when it meant genuine pathetic attempts at manipulation and such. now if someone likes a show you don't like, they're treated as morally reprehensible and it's a valid reason to cut them off.
it's arguably the natural progression after the "cancel culture" boom in 2020-2021, as well. but i'm not looking too deeply to find the cause right now as much as expressing how pissed off it makes me. i spent my whole life terrified to express interest, and as soon as i did, people turned everything into a moral judgement, black and white, no nuance. "if you like something i don't, you're a bad person. if you like something where any single part was controversial, you're a bad person." fuck off
looking back, i think i was having a moment when i made this post and it was probably largely fueled by obsessions that im secretly a bad person and/or perceived as one outside forces, i think i was referencing when people will be like "oh well this one actor from this show was a piece of shit" if you show interest in a show and act like you support their actions or something
i think you did have a point, like consuming media where a controversial figure is involved doesn’t immediately make you a bad person. there is nuance like you said, but i do understand it giving people pause depending on the severity of their actions/level of connection - e.g) if someone idolizes a known racist, i’m not going to feel as comfortable around them
absolutely!! that's why i think i did step back a little cause i do sound like im being all "god you can like anything anymore, snowflakes", but i don't care about celebrities and if i find out one is a bad person, ill avoid them. its not that i think we should ignore controversies, just that i stress myself out about it and i think knowing that other people will drop friends for things that aren't indicative of moral failings made me a little crazy earlier
