
i refused to self-diagnose until i spoke with my therapist about it at length, who felt confident that behaviors and responses and actions were falling into that box. i’m still self-diagnosed technically, but a licensed psychologist with experience in ASD care has supported that assessment. sometimes that’s all it takes, is speaking to a therapist who isn’t able to make that diagnosis, especially in adulthood. there’s only one facility in the entire state that diagnoses adults.
This is very understandable to me and I wished more people took this route, when making this post I was mostly thinking about the people that get on twitter or tiktok and say they have any and everything without getting any type of outside opinions. Im glad everything worked out for you!
I have a fairly similar situation. I don’t have the means to get professionally diagnosed, but I work with autistic people, have researched it and other conditions extensively (in college classes), and have talked to several therapists and doctors who said it’s highly likely, they just cannot officially diagnose. I say I’m autistic but will always preface that I don’t have an official diagnosis and will always uplift other autistic voices before my own
