maybe i’m just too autistic but if i was Orpheus i wouldn’t have turned around if i knew that Eurydice would return to the underworld. even if she begged me i simply just wouldn’t turn around

it’s less “is he stupid why would he turn around” and more that him turning is an expression of the love and care he has for her! it’s like an emphasis on their “true love” but also showing that true love can make you do dumb things sort of, at least how i’ve heard it said

but also there’s a lot of retellings!! in some he was already out and she wasn’t all the way, in some she’s being tormented, and so on. i personally don’t really like the ones where he just isn’t sure she’s there, that feels the least compelling to me
