personally I put my sweaters in a laundry bag (it's small bag safe for washers that you can put delicate items in so they don't get snagged and have more protection from color mixing) and then do a delicate cycle with cold water. in the washer I do a very small amount of detergent and some vinegar (vinegar helps with smells and i think is more gentle on clothes then softener) afterwards I hang dry them, I have a drying rack but you can hang them anywhere like the back of a chair for example

Sometimes handwash - put in a bucket or sink full of soapy water, swish and work it around with your hands. Do the same with clean water a few times to rinse, gently wring it out (maybe press it flat into the sink instead of twisting), than instead of hanging it with a clothes hanger lay it flat over a shower curtain rod to dry. Better if you have a fan to aim at it

Hand wash with woolite detergent in cold water, lay flat on a large towel, roll towel up like a yoga mat and press gently to remove excess water, remove from towel and lay flat to dry (very important to lay flat to dry)

Or wash on delicate cold cycle and throw in the dryer on the no heat setting
