Hot take but if you’ve seen 3+ doctors and they all refuse to diagnose you with autism, maybe you don’t have autism. I don’t understand the obsession with getting an autism diagnosis

SOMETIMES A STRUGGLE IS JUST A STRUGGLE. NOT HAVING A DIAGNOSIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU’RE NOT ALLOWED TO STRUGGLE OR DONT FACE CHALLENGES Another issue with the false dichotomy of neurodivergent/neurotypical

Not saying you're wrong but auDHD is hard to diagnose cuz it's a complicated spectrum

I think a lot of it may have to do with receiving accommodations at school and at work. Most colleges/workplaces don’t allow it unless you have proof of a diagnosis.

different but I'm currently feeling very ashamed about the fact I've tried getting diagnosed with adhd twice and both times got nothing. but I think my situation is just bc of terrible psychiatrists lol the first told me I'm too smart and that my ocd diagnosis isn't legitimate. the second was super insistent I have autism? which I don't think I do, but she's the school psychiatrists and I've heard this is a common issue with her where she'll diagnose you with anything but adhd lol

Just gonna put it out there that those assigned female at birth and people of color tend to miss out on diagnoses because of sexism and racism in health care

tbh i go back and forth on this. in general i think this is true, but depending on ur circumstances and the quality of doctors you have access to, it is entirely and realistically possible for doctors to miss a diagnosis, especially if you mask well.

This is lowkey ableist not all of us are able to fully elucidate our clearly autistic experiences to strangers we just met…

Every three years until I was 18 my parents would take me to have neurological testing redone to keep up with my academic accommodations, because of the testing that needs to be done It had to be a different doctor every time to avoid bias. The autism diagnosis was passed back-and-forth like a volleyball until I was 18. Finally this one doctor in New York. (she was awesome.) finally said there was no doubt I had autism. (she spent three full days in a room doing neurological tests with me.)

i’ve been diagnosed for ADHD but not for autism so i blame my issues on my lack of impulse control which is caused by my ADHD.

It’s not ableist to call out doctor shopping to find one that gives you what you want instead of what’s medically accurate and necessary which is what op is doing

I am not talking about doctors who won’t diagnose you because they’re biased I am not talking about doctors who won’t diagnose you because they don’t know the full story yet I AM talking about doctors who know the context, have training, and won’t diagnose someone based on said training and experience. You asked their opinion, they gave it. Shopping doctors until you find one who will diagnose you is just confirmation bias.

Like let’s say I see three different doctors because my back has been hurting and I think it’s scoliosis. If all three of them say it’s a muscle injury and I start shopping around for a doctor who will diagnose me with scoliosis, I am deliberately ignoring the opinion of medical professionals in favor of my own bias. There’s nothing wrong with a second, third, fourth opinion if you really don’t feel seen, but at a certain point you have to listen to the advice you’re paying these people to get.
