Can someone explain why the terms “high-functioning” and “low-functioning” are harmful? I’m not trying to be obtuse. I’m autistic myself

It implies that some people are better at functioning/living when in reality we all have bad and good days and are better at functioning in ways that others might have more trouble with and vice versa. Low/medium/high support needs is the preferred way to talk about it now because it does not make any direct judgement regarding someone’s ability to live

it can be dismissive of very significant struggles and suffering “high-functioning” neurodivergent people go through. Like people often assume high-functioning means basically neurotypical with a few quirks

when labeled as “high-functioning” you’re treated as if you never have days where your issues are debilitating.

It’s not really, it’s just an example of the euphemism treadmill
