like let’s not act like non-white and/or afab people aren’t some of the least studied groups when it comes to autism and are socialized differently, therefore present differently. afab people (at least me and the ones i know) tend to mask much more

LITERALLY the most ableist people are “high functioning” autistics that either have adhd or both and think they can speak for everyone

Literally.. Or for those who have adhd and a learning disability. I have those things yet people think im faking.

“No you don’t have [literally any neurological/ mental disorder ever recorded] because my friend has it and…” yeah wrap it up

A lot of people are ableist to people who have higher support needs or struggle socially more than them. Nowadays literally any person with dyed hair or piercings will say they have autism yet be ableist to people who are more autistic than them.

yes ppl lie about being mentally ill but y'all have to remember that autistic ppl can be ableist too, and y'all not liking or relating to each other isn't enough to say they're definitely not autistic, we should leave that to the professionals

Shh a lot of people hate hearing that they need to develop discipline and learn to be a whole person when its so much easier to just use whatever diagnosis as a crutch

Not white but also not afab. My friend is. She’s terrible at masking, and so am I, and most of the people who are ableist to her are white high masking autistic women. She goes to an all women’s college, which she really likes, despite some people which she avoids. I’ve found that a lot of you don’t understand us well.

I’m hoping to become an SLP to serve underrepresented groups.

Shame is the root cause of many disorders. You need to be less of a kid though because speaking for every mental health worker to ever live when you say “they will never actually try to help you”(generalizing) is something we are “supposed” to age out of.

i’m sorry about your friend’s experience, and yeah, ableism def goes both ways. even if relatability is hard, basic compassion shouldn’t be. that doesn’t invalidate what this post says, what i said, nor what your friend has gone through.

Oi a**hole, discipline and shame doesn’t have shit to do with physical neurological differences. Literally autistic people’s brains are wired differently. You are an absolute pr*ck and I hope you never have to experience a genuine psychiatric issue, because with this attitude you’d be driving yourself into a ditch ten minutes in. Besides, when the absolute fuck has shame ever helped anyone who needed help? Shame is for people who do something wrong, not for people struggling and in pain.

2/10 bait, autism can’t just be “got rid of” and everyone here knows that. If you’ve got some miracle strategy, feel free to enlighten us, but “just mask harder and live in denial!” is moronic

Congratulations. Now stop using it as an excuse to be an ahole to everyone around you.

A, autism doesn’t need to be gotten rid of. It’s not wrong, just different. Source, I’m autistic (plus four other diagnosed mental disorders) and still a functional member of society with a job, a partner, and currently in college. B, I get panic attacks so bad I can’t breathe or move or think. You think shame will help me think? Discipline will magically make my lungs function? Medication and therapy is how you help us, not treating us like shit. Try having an ounce of empathy for others.
