i’m a teacher and one of my students was reading a passage from a civil rights activist and said the n word. afterwards i was like hey guy just remember to skip over the slurs :) and then she felt so bad that she cried for two whole days. i felt rly bad for her 😭 but i couldn’t just ignore it lol

i remember my junior year of high school we had to read fredrick douglas’ autobiography & obviously there’s slurs in it. well that class had the actual teacher who was on the younger side & a teacher for small group with the kids that had learning disabilities (older side). the younger one made it clear we wouldn’t read those words but once she was absent for a teacher conference so the older had to read & read the words like it was nothing.

we had like three total Black students in my graduating class and one of the boys was stoked to read it every time. we’d literally just popcorn read TKAM and we’d save picking him for when there was a slur & he was STOKED every time lol.

i’d just reassure her that it’s a moment of learning and she is in the most appropriate place to make that kind of a mistake and to learn from it. 😅
