Some of my closest friends told me last night that they don’t see ADHD and OCD as real illnesses and that people who aren’t able to “just lock” in and “get over it” are just “weak” or “privileged” and I genuinely do not know what to do now

Im a neuro major so here’s some science that may help? Would this “friend” consider migraine just a bad headache? (It’s so much more and it’s a real neurological thing). ADHD/OCD are the same kinda thing with actual neuro networks/brain regions behaving differently! And no it’s usually not in you’re own control! (Especially the executive dysfunction—know from experience) there’s a reason why people can get accomodations for adhd and/or ocd (among many others!)

Unless they themselves are diagnosed and have had to force themselves to mask in order to survive they don’t have a leg to stand on.

privilege implies those illnesses are advantages in life & they’re absolutely not. especially not OCD

that’s why i’m so conflicted, I want to have a conversation with them about it but i’m scared they’ll double down in which case i won’t be comfortable with them anymore and i’ll feel really alone sadly. maybe that’s what i have to do

imo being alone is better than being friends with ignorant people

Or another one… would you tell a T1 diabetic that they’re this way bc they ate too much sugar? (Hopefully not!) another example of it not being in a persons own control of getting this… (does that make sense? Sry I’m realizing I’m a little ramble-y lol…)

Except that so many people DO consider migraine a bad headache to just “get over” but you’re so correct!!!!
