what we need is to stop trying to fix the “problem” of our differences. if we were all the same nothing would get done

I have a theory that autism might be a superpower because of the fact that autistic people can literally do anything if they are hyper fixated on something they enjoy (like high speed rails)

Autism is probably how humanity was able to advance into the idea of society and technological advancement.

FR I have autistic family members who are REALLY REALLY good at math or technology to the point that they can do things I never thought was possible but they can’t handle when it’s too loud or a change in schedule 😅

this feeds into the ableist stereotype of autism consisting only of the “bitter crip” and the “super crip.” just like neurotypical folks, autistic people have ranging levels of ability/talent/intelligence. it’s not a superpower it’s just a difference in the way our brains r designed. and we r disabled in this society. high-functioning autists can also be bums. n autists of all support needs don’t need u glorifying their disability to them. just let autistic ppl be ppl.

math/technology might not be ur strong suit and that’s ok.. ur family members worked hard to be as good at that as they r, dont devalue that by saying it’s just bc they’re autistic

It unironically probably is. If we look back in history we can see countless likely examples of this, including Einstein, Newton, etc. Allistic people simply lack the capacity to be so invested in a concept that they pull brand new ideas out of it, IMO. Obviously this doesn’t mean Allists are “less smart” and they lap us in areas like collaboration, emotional stability, and communication (lol), but it’s a trade off

It’s a joke but I see where you are coming from. I also 100% agree that Autism isn’t a superpower. However (outside of a joking context) I do think that if you took the worlds most “intelligent” Allist and Autist, the Autist would likely be “more intelligent”, however both would be outliers and the Autist would STILL be disabled. I agree with your perspective, but I feel that it isn’t inherently “glorifying” Autism to say that many Autistic people are uniquely skilled and intelligent.

oh of course not! it’s specifically the verbiage of “superpower” that i take issue with. i take it very personally because although i love who i am w my autism, it has been responsible for practically my every struggle. “superpower” implies that i should be grateful (?) (for lack of a better term) for something that has caused me a lot of pain

I feel as though it doesn’t “devalue” someone’s skill by acknowledging that their Autism plays a role in it… In my opinion, that insinuates that Autistic brain wiring can’t possibly enable someone to develop unique skills, which is simply not true or backed up by science.

It’s not “othering” ND people to admit that there are things that many (not all) Autistic people are simply more likely to be better at. There are plenty of things that Allistic people are more likely to be better at. If the joke was hypothetically playing off of the idea that Allists are great team players/leaders, it wouldn’t be “othering” Autistic people to admit that they are more likely to be superior at that skill.

Ohhhh my god I’m so sorry I misinterpreted what part of their statement you were responding to 💀 I 100% agree. Like you, Autism has caused almost all of my lifelong suffering and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, honestly… And you put it perfectly, I love who I am with it, and I love the unique thought processes it gives me, but it’s still the origin of my suffering. I’m so sorry for misinterpreting what you were responding to 😭

i want to clarify my thinking since i think there is misunderstanding. this is how i observed #3’s logic: autism is a superpower —> my family members are good at math —> they’re good at math because of their autism —> without autism they might not have had that skill. i wanted to emphasize that autism is not the sole cause of being especially good at something, even if it is a contributing factor. it’s not a superpower that automatically makes you a savant, i guess is what i’m trying to say
