In K12 everyone always just said I was smart, and I did well in the STEM courses in high school, so I thought I was STEM Smart, when really I’m Words Smart. Wasted two years learning that, but at least when I switched majors I had basically tested out of all my math and science gen-ed requirements by taking the early STEM-major courses in those areas lmao

I actively laugh at 17 year old me for wanting to be a doctor, as 23 year old me has learned that we really always should’ve been aiming for lawyer lmao

Looking at my brand-new Philosophy advisor and being like “so do I still have to take Math 1065 (gen-ed math at my school) if I already took Calculus For The Life Sciences?” and him straight up laughing in my face before telling me “No, you’ve absolutely cleared the math requirement” was pretty funny though.

rippp about the extra years spent, but glad you were able to cover all those gen-eds, love how your advisor was just like “yea, no you’re good” lmao also going lawyer route sounds cool! i can only imagine the amount of writing/reading required so i commemorate you on being able to do all of that 🫡

I mean, it took 6 years instead of 4, but I’m graduating with 3 majors (Philosophy, Political Science, and Interdisciplinary Studies) this May, and on track to go to law school after a few years in the professional arena so I can make the money necessary to attend law school. It all shook out in the end. And if I end up really liking my future job and never going back to law school, that’s fine too. My parents are a little bitter that it took as long as it did, but that’ll melt away when I walk.

Interdisciplinary Studies is only even on my diploma because I took those hard science classes early. The fact that I’ve taken freshman and sophomore Biology and Chemistry (was a biochem major at first) + Philosophy of Science, and a few courses from minors I considered but didn’t go through with, like Economics, is what got me that 3rd major. And a degree in 3 fields is a boon to any hiring manager, so I’m not mad at that. I’ll be a 24 year old with a Bachelor’s in 3 fields. The ideal candidate

Yeah, I’m also the first one in my family to get a Bachelor’s Degree at all. I come from a line of plumbers, which I still take pride in, nobody gets anywhere without reliable clean water, and I’m proud that my family provides that for people. I’ll never lose touch with the importance of trade work, I’m just not DOING trade work. That’s also why I think my parents will stop being mad at me for taking 2 extra years the SECOND they see me on that stage.
