How old were you when you learned to read? (I’m now learning that it’s not “normal” to be reading at age 3). Also if you learned to read relatively early did the “joy of reading”/reading for pleasure, decrease after elementary/middle school??

Learned to read at 3 or 4 and was always very far above my reading level in terms not just in phonics but in actual reading comprehension. The magic treehouse books at my school were reserved for 3rd grade and above and I was allowed to check them out in kindergarten. Same with writing. But around sophomore year of highschool I was taking all AP courses and burnt out hard, stopped reading anything that wasn’t required for a class and started having writing assignments go way past due

I was reading by about 4 I think. I read for the joy it constantly all throughout elementary and middle school. And yeah, that desire faded steadily as high school went on. Now I’m in college and I haven’t read a full book in over a year.

Really, what even is reading. Half the population doesn’t have a internal monologue. So is it memorization? Is it breaking down to each letter? Idfk. Do I know how to read? Idk
