I mean not really? Sex was there the whole time, but gender is a social construct based on sex characteristics

yes really, I’d say gender was treated as equivalent to sex in Western cultures but eunuchs were treated as a third gender in the Bible and in many historic Western cultures. also Public Universal Friend of England, who was literally non-binary. also the Hijras of India, Two-Spirit people of NA, Sekrata of Africa, and dozens if not hundreds more. these are just examples of gender diversity; gendered roles have existed for millennia in all cultures.
