Has anyone had experience with DBT? How did you get into a group? Did insurance pay for the group work and the individual therapy? How long until you felt like it started helping?

I don’t have experience in the way you mean. But for your last question: I shadowed a DBT group during my internship. So what I’ll say is that it’s very easy to -not- get anything out of it. Depending on how it’s run it can be very casual. Which is good to encourage open sharing with all those people you don’t know. Some people take it as an opportunity more to vent and socialize rather than communally learning skills.

Point is: Embrace the casual nature and have fun with ice breakers and any activities, but when it comes to the skills being taught, take it seriously. Pay attention, be mentally present, practice the skills when you get opportunities, ask and answer questions. That’s what determines how effective it is and how quickly. You gotta make sure you engage with the intended purpose in order for it to cement in your head and for those skills to become more natural
