Does anyone else think “well if I don’t understand the world bc I’m autistic and people take advantage of me how am I going to teach my autistic kids that”? That’s not the reason I don’t want to have kids though.

This is why I would never want to have kids with an ND wife. I have autism and strongly feel that I would not be able to teach my children how to deal with scenarios like that when I struggle with it myself. It would be better for our children if my wife were not ND so she could better teach those skills

I feel that. being a parent is completely out of the realm of possibility for me for a whole laundry list of reasons, and “how could I ever properly equip a child to survive in a world this brutally cruel and unjust, when I would also need to make sure they can face it with hope & a sense of security, and when I want to give them a happy peaceful childhood?” is certainly one of them

your child may not be autistic, or they may experience autism in a different way. there’s no way to know for sure. but you can still teach them things that you don’t know fully - i teach my students about kindness and respect, and i sure as hell am not kind or respectful all the time. i teach about emotional regulation and behavior, and i still lash out when im upset. you can give them the tools without having them yourself!

Totally agree, it’s just easier to date another ND person, which sucks. I feel like another species. I’m hoping to become an SLP. Idk if I want to work with kids with autism or not. I like research related to that, but I might just become a different type of SLP. Like one who treats swallowing disorders.
