Since I was a little kid, I always thought the little flashes and patterns I saw with my eyes closed were just the individual photons that managed to sneak their way through my eyelids to dance around. Keeps things feeling a little more whimsical~

pretty sure they are!! it’s just a bunch of dim white noise basically and our brains try and find line segments, curves, patterns, and shapes in it because that’s what visual cortices do! the placement/varying density of your photoreceptors also has an impact on how much guesswork your brain has learned to make in different regions. so its kinda more like the photons make your brain dance:)
