If you know you’ll see him every week and want to start slow, you can give him compliments. Compliment something at the end of class. Maybe just say hi the next class. Ask for help with something from class or clarification on homework. Ask to work together on a project. Branch out to asking polite questions about his life.

Seriously just break the ice, find something to annoy him with for 5 minutes, then run away, if he chases you down to follow up or continue the conversation you’ve generated some interest.

You’re probably overthinking it but I am a classic overthinker too so I understand. There’s a good chance you can also just say “hey wanna be friends” and he’ll say yes. It’s up to the vibe. regardless, good luck!
